Gujarat has become a top-five state in India for Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) deployment, boasting 77 MWh capacity. This growth is fueled by the demand for energy security and efficient integration of intermittent renewable sources. The state has a significant pipeline, including a 2,000 MW / 4,000 MWh tender, attracting private sector investment. Leveraging its strong renewable base, Gujarat is set to play a pivotal role in India's clean energy transition and achieving its 55 GWh storage capacity target.

Gujarat is rapidly emerging as a leading state in India's clean energy transition, particularly in the deployment of Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). Currently ranking fifth nationally with an installed capacity of 77 MWh, the state's progress is driven by critical factors such as the increasing demand for energy security amidst volatile conventional fuel markets and the imperative to efficiently integrate intermittent renewable energy sources like solar and wind into the grid. BESS technology is crucial for ensuring a stable and reliable power supply, mitigating the inherent variability of renewables. The future outlook for battery storage in Gujarat is robust, underscored by a significant project pipeline. The Gujarat Electricity Regulatory Commission has already approved tariffs for 1,665 MW / 3,330 MWh of standalone BESS projects, forming part of an ambitious 2,000 MW / 4,000 MWh tender floated by Gujarat Urja Vikas Nigam Limited, which stands as one of the largest battery storage procurements nationwide. Concurrently, private sector involvement is escalating, with major players like Adani Green Energy actively developing large-scale storage capacity and Rajesh Power Services securing a notable 65 MW / 130 MWh project, reflecting growing investor confidence. Experts highlight Gujarat's advantageous position due to its strong renewable energy base and substantial industrial demand. The state is expected to play a pivotal role in India’s energy storage future, contributing significantly to the nation's projected requirement of nearly 55 GWh of storage capacity, enabling round-the-clock clean energy, and strengthening sustainable power infrastructure.
