India and the six-nation Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) bloc are set to sign terms of reference on February 5, officially commencing negotiations for a Free Trade Agreement (FTA). This marks a significant resumption of discussions, following previous rounds in 2006 and 2008. The proposed agreement aims to significantly boost trade relations between India and GCC member states, including Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain.

India and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) are poised to formally restart negotiations for a comprehensive Free Trade Agreement (FTA). On February 5, both parties are scheduled to sign the terms of reference, a crucial step that will set the framework for future discussions. This development signifies a renewed commitment to deepening economic collaboration, as it marks a resumption of talks that had previously stalled after initial rounds conducted in 2006 and 2008.The primary objective of the proposed FTA is to substantially enhance trade volumes and economic cooperation between India and the six GCC member states: Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, and Bahrain. For India, an FTA with the GCC opens doors to a lucrative market for its goods and services, while for GCC nations, it provides greater access to India's vast consumer base and rapidly growing economy. The agreement is expected to reduce tariffs, remove trade barriers, and facilitate easier movement of goods, services, and potentially investments between the regions. This strategic partnership is vital given the significant existing trade and investment flows, particularly in energy, remittances, and infrastructure. By establishing a more structured and preferential trade environment, both India and the GCC aim to unlock new opportunities, diversify their economies, and foster sustainable long-term growth and stability in their bilateral relations. The signing of the terms of reference is a foundational step towards realizing these ambitious economic goals.
