India Rejects Starlink Gen 2 for Direct-to-Device Services

India's IN-SPACe regulator has rejected Elon Musk's Starlink Gen 2 constellation for direct-to-device (D2D) services. The rejection is attributed to unmet requirements and the use of unpermitted frequency bands. While Starlink's Gen 1 was approved for traditional broadband, the advanced D2D services face a regulatory void, as India is yet to establish a framework. This necessitates Starlink seeking fresh approval once D2D regulations are in place.

Elon Musk's Starlink has faced a significant hurdle in India, as the nation's space regulatory body, IN-SPACe, has declined approval for its Gen 2 constellation, which is designed to offer advanced direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity. The primary reasons cited for the rejection include Starlink's failure to meet specific regulatory requirements and its proposed utilization of frequency bands not permitted within India.
