India's Minister of State Jitin Prasada affirmed that the India-UK free trade agreement will not limit India's ability to use compulsory licensing, a critical tool for accessing life-saving technologies during emergencies. The agreement also ensures Indian companies guaranteed access to the UK's public procurement market, valued over £90 billion annually. Concurrently, India is pursuing FTA negotiations with the European Union and the US, strengthening its international trade relations.

The Indian government has clarified that the ongoing India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA) will explicitly safeguard India's sovereign right to employ compulsory licensing. This mechanism is crucial for ensuring access to essential medicines and life-saving technologies, particularly during public health emergencies. This assurance, conveyed by Minister of State Jitin Prasada, highlights India's commitment to prioritizing public health needs over certain intellectual property rights, a long-standing position in international trade. Beyond compulsory licensing, the proposed trade pact is expected to yield significant economic advantages for Indian businesses. A key element provides Indian companies guaranteed and non-discriminatory access to the United Kingdom's substantial public procurement market, which is estimated to exceed £90 billion annually. This access creates considerable opportunities for Indian businesses across various sectors to bid for UK government contracts, promoting increased trade and economic collaboration. These ongoing negotiations are part of a broader strategic effort by India to expand its global trade presence. India is also actively pursuing Free Trade Agreements with other major economic blocs, including the European Union and the United States, demonstrating a comprehensive strategy to enhance its international trade relationships and secure advantageous terms for its industries and citizens globally. This multi-faceted approach aims to diversify India's trade partnerships and open new avenues for economic growth and technological progress.
