India's Fertiliser Security Strong and Stable, Government Affirms

India's fertiliser security remains robust, with supply consistently exceeding demand, according to the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers. Dismissing shortage claims, the government highlighted significant surpluses during Rabi 2025-26 and early FY 2026-27. Proactive measures include strengthening global sourcing, securing 25 LMT urea via tenders, and ensuring stable natural gas supply for domestic production. These efforts guarantee timely and adequate fertiliser access for farmers, reinforcing agricultural stability and readiness for future demand.

The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilisers has reiterated that India’s fertiliser security is strong, stable, and well-managed, consistently ensuring availability exceeds demand across key fertilisers. The ministry dismissed recent claims of shortages, presenting data that reflects a comfortable and well-buffered national supply position. During the recently concluded Rabi 2025–26 season (October 2025 to March 2026), urea availability was 257.59 LMT against a requirement of 196.06 LMT, while DAP availability stood at 75.40 LMT versus a requirement of 53.43 LMT, leading to significant surpluses. This positive trend has continued into the current financial year, with fertiliser availability from April 1 to April 23 significantly exceeding requirements for both urea (69.33 LMT vs 18.17 LMT) and DAP (22.78 LMT vs 5.90 LMT), positioning India strongly for the upcoming Kharif season. In addition to domestic measures, the government has proactively expanded global sourcing strategies, with Indian missions abroad facilitating alternative supply channels and diversifying imports; approximately 25 LMT of urea has already been secured through global tenders. Furthermore, to sustain domestic fertiliser output, the government has addressed natural gas availability challenges, ensuring a steady supply to fertiliser plants for uninterrupted production. Overall, India's resilient and efficiently managed fertiliser supply chain ensures farmers have timely and adequate access, supporting current agricultural cycles and enhancing preparedness for future demand.
