India’s Strategic Pivot to Coal Gasification for Energy Self-Reliance
India is intensifying its focus on coal gasification to achieve energy self-reliance and reduce import dependencies, particularly amidst global disruptions. This technology converts abundant domestic coal into valuable syngas for fuels, fertilizers, and petrochemicals. Despite challenges like high ash content and capital intensity, India is increasing investments, adopting advanced methods like Underground Coal Gasification, and developing multiple projects to leverage its vast coal reserves more cleanly and efficiently, aiming for economic growth and net-zero goals.
India is strategically boosting its efforts in coal gasification, a technology crucial for enhancing national self-reliance in energy, fertilizers, and petrochemicals, especially in light of geopolitical crises. Coal gasification converts coal into synthesis gas (syngas), which can then be transformed into Synthetic Natural Gas, methanol, ammonia, and other industrial feedstocks, offering a cleaner and more efficient alternative to conventional coal combustion.Despite possessing the world's fifth-largest coal reserves and significant domestic production, India still imports a substantial amount of coal due to quality issues and supply-demand mismatches. Key challenges for scaling coal gasification include the high ash content of Indian coal (30-45%), which increases processing costs, and the difficulty and capital intensiveness of mining deep coal deposits. To overcome these, India is exploring modern technologies like Underground Coal Gasification (UCG), having initiated its first pilot project in Jharkhand in 2024.Historically, India has lagged behind countries like China in adopting and investing in coal gasification, where the technology extensively supports ammonia and methanol production. However, India is now accelerating its pace. The budget for the National Coal Gasification Mission has been significantly increased, and substantial financial incentives have been approved for new projects. Currently, Jindal Steel Limited operates India's only gasification plant, with Coal India Ltd (CIL) and private entities planning several new ventures, including the Talcher Fertiliser Plant, India's first urea plant based on this technology.Coal gasification is vital for India's energy security, reducing vulnerability to volatile global prices and supply disruptions. While capital-intensive, it offers a pathway for cleaner coal utilization, potential integration with Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Sequestration (CCUS) technologies, and aligns with India’s Net Zero targets, contributing to the ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’ vision. To ensure widespread deployment, India needs to balance leveraging proven global technologies with investing in domestic R&D tailored to its unique coal characteristics.
