Iran Conflict to Deepen Raw Material Wounds for Indian Businesses
The ongoing US-Israel-Iran conflict is set to intensify cost pressures for Indian companies due to disrupted supply chains and soaring raw material prices. Economists warn that escalating energy and freight costs will fuel inflation and compress margins across sectors like airlines, chemicals, and oil marketing. Micro, small, and medium enterprises are considered most vulnerable to these widespread economic repercussions, requiring businesses to brace for a challenging period ahead.
The geopolitical tensions arising from the conflict involving US-Israel and Iran are projected to impose significant economic challenges on Indian businesses, leading to heightened cost pressures. This situation is primarily driven by anticipated disruptions in global supply chains and a subsequent increase in raw material prices. Economists are cautioning that a rise in energy costs, coupled with higher freight charges, will exacerbate inflationary pressures across the Indian economy. Consequently, profit margins are expected to be squeezed across a broad spectrum of industries. Sectors identified as particularly susceptible include oil marketing companies (OMCs), which are directly impacted by crude oil price volatility, along with manufacturing segments such as fertilisers, ceramics and tiles, paints, tyres, and chemicals. Furthermore, the synthetic textiles and airline industries are also bracing for considerable increases in operational costs. Ranjan Sharma, a senior director at CareEdge Ratings, emphasizes that micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) are likely to be the most exposed and vulnerable to the financial fallout from this international conflict, given their often-fragile financial structures and greater sensitivity to input cost fluctuations. This confluence of factors signals a difficult period for India Inc, demanding strategic responses to navigate the economic fallout.
