India's chemicals industry is projected to expand significantly to $230-255 billion by 2030, growing at 8-9% annually, driven by high-growth segments like EVs and renewables. A McKinsey report highlights this potential but also notes a $31 billion trade deficit and low R&D investment. To capitalize, McKinsey recommends scaling global operations, partnerships, increased R&D, and AI adoption, positioning India as a global manufacturing hub through import substitution and strategic growth levers.

India's chemicals industry is poised for substantial expansion, projected to reach $230-255 billion by 2030, up from its current $155-165 billion valuation. A report by McKinsey & Company predicts an 8-9% compound annual growth rate, surpassing the broader economic growth. This growth will be fueled by emerging high-growth segments such as semiconductors, electric vehicles, renewables, and construction, which are expected to generate an additional $30-35 billion in demand by 2030, growing at about 16% annually. Construction-linked chemicals alone are forecast to double to $28 billion. While the sector has shown impressive performance with a 17% total shareholder return CAGR over the last decade, it faces challenges including a significant $31 billion trade deficit, particularly in inorganics and polymers, indicating vast import substitution opportunities. India's share in global chemical trade remains low at 3%, and its R&D investment is merely 0.5% of revenue, considerably less than global peers. To capitalize on its potential, McKinsey recommends strategic initiatives: scaling global operations, pursuing programmatic partnerships and acquisitions, significantly increasing R&D spending, and adopting AI-led efficiencies to improve EBITDA by 8-12%. Strengthening supply chains and balance sheets is also crucial to navigate global volatility and foster value-led growth. These measures aim to transform India into a competitive global manufacturing hub, moving beyond just being a fast-growing domestic market.
