Researchers at MIT World Peace University in Pune have achieved a significant breakthrough in hydrogen storage, reducing the storage time from 18 hours to just two. This innovation utilizes a Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) system, enabling hydrogen to be stored and transported safely and cost-effectively as a non-flammable liquid under normal conditions. This development removes a major barrier to large-scale hydrogen adoption, dramatically cutting logistical costs and strengthening India's position as a global leader in clean energy innovation.

Pune's MIT World Peace University (MIT-WPU) has achieved a pivotal breakthrough in hydrogen technology, significantly advancing India's clean energy ambitions. Researchers there have successfully reduced the hydrogen storage time to an unprecedented two hours, a stark contrast to the global average of eighteen hours. This achievement positions India at the forefront of global clean energy innovation by directly addressing the long-standing challenges of hydrogen storage and transportation. The core of this innovation is a sophisticated Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carrier (LOHC) system. This technology allows hydrogen to be stored and transported safely and cost-effectively in a non-flammable, non-explosive liquid form at normal temperatures and pressures. Critically, it eliminates the necessity for extreme measures such as 253°C cryogenic cooling or the use of ultra-high-pressure cylinders, which have historically presented major logistical and safety hurdles to widespread hydrogen adoption. Furthermore, the LOHC-based solution offers substantial reductions in logistical costs. By enabling hydrogen to be handled and transported as a stable liquid, much like conventional industrial fuels, it removes the reliance on complex and expensive specialized infrastructure. This simplified approach is expected to dramatically accelerate the adoption of hydrogen across various sectors, from industrial applications to energy generation. Consequently, this breakthrough not only strengthens India's competitive edge in the global race for clean energy but also establishes new pathways for sustainable energy deployment, reinforcing the nation's reputation as a leader in global innovation.
